About Ani Ski Resort (Mt. Moriyoshi)
Ani Ski Resort climbs Mt. Moriyoshi in Akita Prefecture, best known for the juhyo, ice-crusted 'snow monster' trees that form on the upper mountain and draw visitors for guided night viewing tours via the six-person gondola. It's a modest setup by Japanese standards, just 5 trails and 3 lifts (the gondola plus two chairlifts) over a 2,175-foot vertical, but the mountain itself is the real draw. Kitaakita City has run the resort since 2011 through a local nonprofit, keeping a rural hill going that might otherwise have closed.
