About Bluebird Backcountry
Bluebird Backcountry was a lift-free, uphill-only ski area near Kremmling, Colorado, built around human-powered skinning and avalanche education rather than chairlifts. It operated for four seasons before closing permanently in July 2023, a casualty of its remote location and the capital intensity of the ski business. It's remembered as one of the more interesting experiments in North American skiing: a genuine backcountry experience with ski patrol and marked runs, no lift ticket required.
