Zermatt sits beneath the Matterhorn in a car-free village and holds Ikon Pass access to roughly 360 kilometers of runs, much of it above 3,000 meters. It's one of the highest ski areas in Europe, with lift-served glacier skiing that keeps some slopes open into summer. The village itself bans combustion-engine cars, so arrival is by train or electric taxi. Zermatt's terrain also connects across the border into Cervinia, Italy, making it one of the few resorts to straddle two countries on skis.
